The Road came out before the recent surge of dystopian and apocalyptic books. And since I'm a HUGE fan of those I was understandably thrilled. Then I saw that Stephen King loved it and I was just dying to read this book. I remember the absolute AGONY of waiting for it to arrive. And then I started reading it. I kept waiting for it to get better. And I kept on reading ...and waiting. It never got better. My feeling of disappointment was overwhelming. For months .. no, years afterword, I would glance up at it on the shelf and feel a surge of depression. I finally donated it to the library so some other poor sap didn't get stuck paying for that crappy book. I still read about the critical acclaim that book gets and shudder in disgust.
