30 Day Book Challenge - Day 12 Book That I Hated and Loved

Narcissus in Chains - Laurell K. Hamilton

I started thinking about this one last night at work. I've had several books that pissed me off because of a character that was killed off or something like that, but I couldn't come up with the worst. Just now I was explaining the 30 day book challenge to my husband when he reminded me of the one book I have complained about the most over the years.

For me this was the beginning of the end of my love affair with Anita Blake. For all the books before this one, Anita was amazing. She was funny and interesting and was someone I could imagine being friends with. And then she had to go a frak it all up. Anita can do anything. Every man she has sex with is instantly obsessed with her and her magic vagina. Her powers kept expanding exponentially. God she pisses me off.

Suddenly my favorite urban fantasy series became nothing but porn. Now I don't have a problem with porn. I watch and read it on occasion. But if I'm gonna read porn it needs to be called porn. Not called urban fantasy. The story is utterly eclipsed by the sex. I don't mind some sex in my UF but good Goddess! When less than 25% of the book is actually moving the story forward that really annoys me. When I skim over the sex scenes and can read a 500 page book in a little over an hour I start raging. I can't count the number of times I've bitched to my husband about the way the LKH books have disappointed me.

On the upside though, my failing interest in those have led me to many, many great authors to take her place in my heart. Kim Harrison. Charlaine Harris, Rob Thurman and the list could go on and on. So maybe this wasn't such a bad thing.
